About Awesome Coins

Are you wondering how you can take your love for history and turn it into a hobby that you can enjoy for your entire life? Everyone has a hobby or an activity that they pursue with enthusiasm, but unfortunately not all hobbies are created equal. For many young people a certain sport may be the hobby of choice, however as people age, these hobbies can become impossible to do because of changing abilities.

Coin collecting on the other hand is a hobby that can last an entire lifetime. Collecting coins does not require any special skill to begin or require a large investment. It can be enjoyed by young children and seniors alike. The “success” of your collection is not based on any factor outside of yourself. You determine your level of comfort in regards to cost and time investment and even people with serious physical impairments can enjoy coin collecting. Whether you are young and enjoy digging through mom and dad’s pocket change for treasures, or a seasoned collector, coin collecting is a wonderful and fulfilling hobby. For more serious collectors or investors, it can be a source of significant income.

So what is it that makes coin collecting so enjoyable? This is not an easy question to answer as many will have very different answers to that question. Sometimes its the thrill of the hunt, while for others spending time looking at them in detail and admiring a coins artistic style and design is what’s so enjoyable. Beyond that, coin collecting can be entirely for financial gain.

From a historical standpoint, coin collecting is very fascinating. The history of certain countries and regions is quite interesting and the story behind a currency can ignite a passion for history like nothing else can. Imagine finding out why the U.S. Government banned the sale of gold coins for a short time, or why a coin sold at auction for 7 million dollars. Even more exciting is the possibility that you could own a unique piece of history with a story to tell. With coins that were once in circulation, it is possible that you may own a coin that was once held by Abraham Lincoln or Sir Winston Churchill. You may never know the true answer to that but it’s fun to think that this could be the case.

The treasure hunting aspect of coin collecting can make looking for certain coins a real adventure. Imagine a collector looking for a certain coin to complete a series. Visits to coin shows, flea markets and antique dealers can make the chase a interesting one. Even visiting estate auctions and digging through antiques treasures can yield some great finds at bargain prices. Everyone loves a good deal!

Many owners of coins also collect for investment purposes. Because most older coins are created with gold and silver, they have a collectible value as well as a metal content value. We can see by looking at historical prices of metals that significant gains can be made. For instance, if the price of gold was $400 per ounce and you bought a 1 ounce gold coin for that price you could make significant gains if you sold it today at over $800 per ounce.

For more serious collectors with deeper pockets, coin collecting can be a lucrative hobby. Sometimes due to a limited mintage of a coin the value can be quite high, sometimes into the tens of thousands of dollars or even more. Sometimes when coins were produced, certain irregularities were created and sent into circulation before anyone noticed the error. These coins, because of their unique and rare nature make them highly valuable and sought after in many circumstances.

For a new collector or a seasoned collector the best way to get into coin collecting is to purchase a coin publication or book that will give you a place to start. Some people prefer to collect gold, while others prefer silver. Some people like to collect coins from their year of birth or their child’s year of birth. How you decide to pursue your coin collecting hobby is entirely up to you but the possibilities are endless!
